Spinning Plarn & Plying it

I took this picture at the quilt show yesterday.  I love old spinning wheels.  It seemed to fit this past week for me, since I have been spinning a lot.

The other day I spun some white plarn (plastic bag yarn) on the spinning wheel.  I finished spinning it yesterday, and then I plied it with some novelty yarn on my Navajo spindle.  I love how much this spindle can hold.

Here is is in a ball.  This is 3 yarn cakes of plarn and 2.5 skeins of Trellis yarn by Lion Brand.

Here is the Trellis yarn by Lion Brand.  I seem to have a lot of this.  I think because it only cost $1, but it has been collecting dust for a while.  I love plying novelty yarn with plarn.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this plarn and yarn plying post. I really want to try this as I have my homemade Navajo spinner now and think I might be able to do this. I too have several of those novelty balls of ribbon yarn that is just calling to me to do something with them. Your ply'd plarn is gorgeous too which really makes me want to get busy and try this.

  2. I can't wait to see your spun and plied plarn and what you make out of it. I love all of your patterns and projects. It is nice finding things to do with yarn that might not have been used otherwise. I love how the novelty yarn dresses up the plarn.

  3. Hi, this is Jess from Lion Brand. I really love how you utilized Trellis! The colors really pop against the white of the plarn. You've really demonstrated the versatility of novelty yarn. Have a great day!

    With warm regard,

  6. Kimberly, here is a video of me plying plarn on a Navajo Spindle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3lBZmXcHgE Basically I'm just twisting it to make it more yarn like.
